photography
I was inspired to create this collection by the work of black & white photographers like Alan Schaller and by Jarin Blaschke’s cinematography within A24’s The Lighthouse (2019). I set out with the intention of taking still photos that force a new perspective onto an everyday object or location. I want most of the photos to feel quite intimate, and rely upon close-up shots, often aided by flash, with shallow depth of field and high contrast to draw attention to the subject.
While all photos are shot on the Canon Rebel XTi DSLR, I edited them with a grittier, more analogue, film-like feeling in mind to give them more texture. Ultimately, this project was a journey outside my typical comfort zone, but it’s a style I definitely plan to continue in for a while to smooth out rough edges and improve upon what I’ve already started.
